Every year around this time, the requests begin from my long-time readers for re-posting of my Blog posts relating to the year 1963, specifically the one on the shocking assassination of our 35th president, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. I originally wrote this in 1990 as an article for S.C.O.P.E., a national medical newsletter, when I was working at the City of Hope in Duarte California. The other articles reflect upon and recall life in our world as it was in the year 1963.
58 years have now passed since that shocking Friday afternoon in Dallas in 1963, but the conspiracy theorists are at it again. Demanding the release of the long-classified files and populating the airwaves and social media with new theories about the assassination. But rather than dwell on the morbid details of the historic event, I think it would be more beneficial to reveal what life was like in this country in that pivotal year and what today’s leaders could reflect upon and learn from the 1960s.
